Starting a wax melt business - what you need to know!

If you're thinking of starting a new business making and selling wax melts, first of all, Congratulations!  Fortune favours the brave and it also favours the prepared....so well done for reading this post.

Things you will need!

  • Equipment & Ingredients

As you may already know - to make a wax melt you need two things. Wax, and fragrance oils.  We don't sell wax yet but we have some of the best oils on the market.

You will also most likely need clamshells! We have you covered there too.

Other optional decorations include wax dyes, mica powders and glitters to make your product stand out.

Ok that was the easy bit and we all know about that stuff....but what else?

  • Insurance

This is incredibly important.  You are sending your wonderful products into the big wide world which is a fantastic achievement, but it is also fraught with potential pitfalls.  Craft insurance can be obtained from companies such as Ian Wallace and Direct Line.  It is important to be honest and open with your insurance companies and to also hold up your end of the bargain in order to avoid voiding your agreement

  • CLP Documentation

CLP stands for "Classification, Labelling and Packaging", it was introduced in June 2015, this means that all candles and wax melts made will need to inform customers of any chemical hazards within the product.  Luckily we make this easy by providing a CLP document for every fragrance oil we sell.  You can find a full list here.

We will have a more in depth guide for CLP soon but for now just know that you need the labels on any product you sell.

  • Company Registration

Don't forget you will also need to register with HMRC as a sole trader or ltd company.  You will need to keep an eye on your incomings and outgoings because at the end of each financial year you will need to fill out a self assessment tax return.

Whats the next step?  I would highly recommend checking out or Branding blog post.  Get your branding on point from the start and help your business go from side hustle to money machine in no time!

Good Luck!
